Miller Stanford Linear Accelerator Center Stanford, California 94309 Abstract A data acquisition method has been developed at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC) that provides accurate beam parameter information using sub-tolerance xcitation and synchronized detection. This is being applied to several SLC sub-systems to provide high speed feedback on beam parameters such as linac output energy spread. The method has significantly improved control of the linac energy spread. The linac average phase offset ($), used to compensate the effects of longitudinal wakefieldsl, is adjusted fl control bit (about 0.18” S-band or 20% of tolerance), in a continuous fashion. Properly coordinated beam energy measurements provide a measure of the derivative of the accelerating voltage (dEId4). The position of the beam on the RF wave can thus be determined to f 0.3’ in about 5 seconds. The dithering does not contribute significantly to the energy jitter of the SLC and therefore does not adversely affect routine operation. -Future applications include control of the interaction region beam size and orientation.

Luminosity Optimization Feedback in the SLC
The luminosity optimization at the SLC has been limited by the precision with which one can measure the micron size beams at the Interaction Point. Ten independent tuning parameters must be adjusted. An automated application has been used to scan each parameter over a significant range and set the minimum beam size as measured with a beambeam deflection scan. Measurement errors limited the accu...
متن کاملDither for Smoothing Relay Feedback Systems: an Averaging Approach
Dither signals are commonly used for compensating nonlinearities in feedback systems in electronics and mechanics. The seminal works by Zames and Shneydor and more recently by Mossaheb present rigorous tools for systematic design of dithered systems. Their results rely however on a Lipschitz assumption on the nonlinearity and thus do not cover important applications with discontinuities. The ai...
متن کاملDesign and Implementation of a Control System for a DC Servomechanism with an Internal Dither Created by a Limit Cycle
Purpose of this paper is designing of a positional angle control system for a DC servomechanism. The servomechanism system consists of a direct current (DC) motor, a motor driver, a measuring sensor, and a control board to adjust angular position. The motor in the servomechanism has a non-linear element called dead-zone. Presence of dead-zone causes the nonlinear behavior of system. Injecting a...
متن کاملFrequency shift dither for analogue to digital converters
This paper discusses a new dither technique to linearise an Analogue to Digital Converter (ADC). This typically results in a more than 20 dB reduction in harmonic distortion. Additive dither [1,2,3,4] has been demonstrated to reduce the spurii to a significant extent. In this paper Frequency Shift (FS) dither is described. FS dither applies a frequency shift to the signals to be digitised. Afte...
متن کاملFast Feedback for Linear Colliders
A fast feedback system provides beam stabilization for the SLC. As the SLC is in some sense a prototype for future linear colliders, this system may be a prototype for future feedbacks. The SLC provides a good base of experience for feedback requirements and capabilities as well as a testing ground for performance characteristics. The feedback system controls a wide variety of machine parameter...
